Power BI: Creating a Data Driven Culture

Having a Business Intelligence platform used to be a luxury for organisations. Many were focused on making their business profitable and once that was achieved, or more investment was secured, they could look at the luxuries like upgrading their IT, expanding MI or Analyst teams or investing in Business Intelligence software. 

 

All of this is great – but how do we create a data driven culture? I.e. how do we get our leaders and employees to use the tools we give them or work with our D&A teams effectively? 

  1. 1: Get users involved in the process from day one.  

What do your team want to see? What questions would they like to see answered? What would help them to do their job? How would they like the data to look – do they prefer bar charts, pie charts, %s? If you are working with sensitive data, it’s also a good idea to get your DPO involved from the beginning so you can plan ahead – you’ll find they really appreciate it too! 

  1. 2: Understand your business fully. 

What is hurting? What is working? What is not working? Barriers to success? Pinch points? Are you missing key pieces in your data storyline? Figure out how using data and your visualisation tool could help with these.  

  1. 3: Create systems, processes and ways of working where people must use the apps when they make a decision. 

Make people access the apps during meetings and as part of their day-to-day jobs. Hard wire analytics into your organisation 

  1. 4: Encourage D&A champions within your leadership team and your front-line workers. 

It is vital that your leadership teams role model the behaviours you are encouraging. Encourage people to use data in meetings, bring up your PowerBI dashboards (or other visualization tool) and ‘play’ with the data as you talk. Encourage collaborative working! 

  1. 5: Create excitement around these apps – start a data revolution. 

Explore the change curve. Encourage those innovators within your organisation, and the easy adaptors amongst us. Ensure your users feel safe to explore and try new things. Fail fast. Have trust in great teamwork and relationships. 

One final thought to bear in mind while you are creating new solutions for employees or customers – no one cares unless it helps them. Ask yourself “how does this help the person it’s designed for?” and “why does this matter?”.
